- Asbestos and materials that may contain it
- Propane tanks, aerosols, and other pressurized containers
- Medical waste, ammunition, and other hazardous materials
Appliances, Electronics, and Tires
These items are not necessarily dangerous in the way chemicals are, but they are banned because they contain recoverable materials, refrigerants, or components that landfills will not take:
- Appliances containing Freon such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers, unless the refrigerant has been professionally removed and certified
- Electronics and e-waste including televisions, computers, monitors, and printers
- Tires, which are banned from landfills and must be recycled separately
- Batteries of all kinds, from car batteries to lithium-ion packs
- Fluorescent bulbs and tubes, which contain mercury
How North Carolina's Landfill Bans Change the Rules
North Carolina is stricter than many states about what can be buried in a landfill, and those state rules directly shape what our dumpsters can accept. The most important ones for homeowners to know:
- Electronics are banned from disposal. Under state law, discarded computers and televisions cannot be thrown in the trash or landfilled. That means they cannot ride along in your dumpster either. TVs, laptops, monitors, and similar e-scrap must be routed to an approved electronics recycler.
- Appliances need Freon removed. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners cannot be landfilled with refrigerant still inside. A certified technician has to recover the Freon first, after which the metal shell can be recycled as scrap.
- Tires and certain other items are diverted. Scrap tires, used oil, oil filters, lead-acid batteries, and yard waste all carry their own disposal bans or restrictions and are handled through dedicated recycling streams rather than the landfill.
Because these bans travel with the material all the way to the transfer station, we simply cannot accept these items in a bin. - Appliances with Freon: Scrap metal recyclers and some appliance retailers will remove refrigerant and recycle the unit. Once the Freon is certified out, the metal is fully recyclable.
- Batteries and bulbs: Auto parts stores take lead-acid car batteries, and many hardware retailers collect rechargeable batteries and fluorescent tubes.
